Definately Engineering... i think

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for engineering. I've finished registering for next semester for some of the needed prereqs.

Unfortunately, because I didn't take advanced math in school, I'll be doing 3 years just in general education creds. I'll finish up with everything else but the math in two years, so I figure I'll fill the gap with pursuing a certificate in technical writing.

No real idea of what kind of engineer I want to be. Here are the ones I was thinking of:

Mechanical Engineer (#3 on CNN's list of top most in demand degrees for the class of 2005 - #4 on their list of lucrative degrees - a nice collaboration, wouldn't ya say?).

Materials Science & Engineering (Sounds a LOT more interesting than mechanical engineering, but not as practical as the job market is about 1/20th the size).

Engineering Physics (Love to do this, even if I choose another discipline in engineering I'd like to take this as a dual major. I really like the physics class I'm taking, but just a physics degree isn't much to get a job on. This gives me the equivalent to a BA in both physics and engineering. Tourble is, I still have to choose a concentration).

Also, there's a really neat Applied Physics doctorate program offer by U of M. But that's way off in the future.

Matter of fact - all of this is off in the future!!! I still have yet to see if I've got the smarts for the next few years of gen ed math!

Please do keep me in your prayers. I really want to be sure that I'm making the right career choice.

go for electrical or biomedical engineering dude, its where the future is!

Have you been to ABET.com?? it's quite interesting, and gives a lot of info about the diff. fields of Engineering...
I was there just recently... You have the EXACT same dilemma I have. Accounting is OUT... ssooo Engineering? Scientist? Economics Major? Doctor? AnY of these could work... I guess I'll just have to take a whole bunch of different classes, until I find the right one.
Annoying as all get out. Ya think ya know what you're going to do for like 6 years, and BAM... half way through 1st semester of college and you're whole perspective changes..
    gggrrrr....

Whew! It's a relief to know that I'm not the only one!

So Heather, I'm interested in knowing your math background.

I only took Alg. I in highschool and now I'm paying for it.

Haha... hhmmmm... Math background, A) Math is my favorite subject, and so I worked at it, and I was good at it. B) I'm, obviously, not a genius so I really did have to work hard the last two years of highschool... AP Calc AB (Calc 1) was taken in 11th grade along with an AP Stats class and an AP Comp I class... no fun... I happened to have the coolest teachers though... so it all worked out. I really liked Stats, and although the teacher was good and I liked her, she was extremely tough, and I ended up with a "C"!! lowest grade ever! =-(
Then senior year, I took AP Calc BC... I would not recomend AP classes to many, just do it through a community college if you're still in high school. AP exams are the worst thing ever invented, and there are experiments being done saying that the exams aren't really that effective! GGAAAA!!!! I coulda told 'em that!! Saved them a bundle of money too... Anyway. Calc BC was hard, but the teacher worked with me, I liked it, truely, and so I worked at understanding the different concepts, and ended with an A... somehow...
And that is the short history of my math background... ;-)
I got "lucky" and ended up at an awesome accelerated school for just a few classes. (Joe, remind me to tell you about Central Campus some time, it is a stellar school.) The teachers were the best in the district, for the most part, and they wanted to be there as much as we did. Mr. Z was my Calc teacher, and I don't think I coulda had a better Calc teacher at any of the colleges around here.
    g'nite... err... mornin'!!
    Happy Thanksgiving!

    p.s. I have a slight misnomer:
    it's www.ABET.org not ABET.com
    ciao

jewelery: I have to say that I really don't see how my site helped you. I'm mystified.

Heather: Gaa! I feel so inadequate (sob). I only took Alg. I in highschool and half of geometry (it was hurting my cherished GPA, so I dropped it). Now I've got an extra year of math to do in my gen ed program and I'm not even sure if I'm cut-out for a math related field.

I got a B+ in Alg. 1, but then my "studying" consisted of looking over the chapter just before the test. Gotta love homeschool.

I'm pulling off what I think is an A in Intermediate Alg. - but I really am working for it.

So yah, I guess part of me wants to go for engineering just to prove something to myself. The other part says "hey, if I can pull this off, it's gonna be a really interesting field to work in!" We'll see what transpires...

Josiah even if mathematics wasn't your strong point you could still become an excellent engineer, for the best engineers are the ones who are bull headed enough to complete the task even if it kills them!

Oh, I'm bull-headed all right. Ask anyone of my family members!

Thanks for the encouragement... whoever you are.
